 “Why The Tomato”

Leamington - the “Tomato Capital” of Canada – was long ago the first beneficiary of the H. J. Heinz Company of Canada Ltd.'s annual picnic celebrating the area’s bountiful Tomato harvest. Over time community-minded people acted to continue this unique tradition and celebration of culture and rural resources - the result being the “Tomato Festival” which has grown in size and popularity ever since.

Heinz uses locally grown Field Tomatoes from the Essex-Kent region in its food products which are shipped worldwide. The area is also composed of the largest concentration of Commercial Greenhouses, which supply supermarkets across North America. Combined, the Tomato is the largest vegetable crop grown in area. And with the Tomato as the centre piece, the Festival retains a strong family and community identity throughout the Southwestern Ontario Region. Community and Visitors are welcomed to celebrate the Festival's growing prosperity, its community achievements, and to have a great deal of Family Fun.
